Setting yourself up as a marketing consultant can be trickier than it seems. Sure, in our online age, marketing is more important than ever, and everyone’s looking to market themselves and their skills and businesses – but why should someone choose to consult with you? These four points will help you demonstrate to them why you’re the one to help them out.

  1. Understand Your Field Inside and Out

First and foremost, you need to have your marketing niche and industry down cold. You should be able to answer any industry-related question a client may have. Carve out a niche for yourself in an industry, and make sure everything about your professional persona exudes expertise.

  1. Develop a Web Presence

This should include a professional website, blog and social media presence and all. You can run these latter two elements themselves or subcontract them out, though if you choose the latter make sure they are run with the professionalism and accuracy you’d want people to associate with you. Your web presence is your chance to make and spread your name online. For many, it will be the first impression they have of you – make sure it’s a good one.

  1. Have the Right Mindset

Consulting work is hard. During a dry spell, you can start to feel like nothing’s working and you’ll never get anyone interested in your services. On the other hand, too much work can cause you to feel swamped. Work can be streaky this way, especially when you’re starting out, with “triumph” following “disaster,” and vice versa. Take Kipling’s advice, and “treat those two impostors just the same” by maintaining the right working mindset, and don’t let yourself feel too “high” or “low.”

  1. Values Are Everything

We live in a values-driven working world. Everyone from the smallest blog and business to YouTube and Twitch stars to multinational corporations love to sell themselves on their “values.” Decide what values you stand for, remain true to them, and sell yourself on these points.

Each of these points can help you jumpstart your marketing consultancy career.
